How we chose: This is a researched comparison of published features and manuals, not a timed hands-on test. Our recommendations weigh gameplay, everyday care and the features that matter to different buyers. Specifications and support information checked October 1, 2026.

Short on time? Start with the everyday-use comparison, then check care during work or school. Buying a pair? Check the connection compatibility table. A cute shell matters less if the care routine does not fit your day.

Deciding between the two? Our Tamagotchi Uni vs Connection comparison focuses on daily care, decorating and compatibility.

Tamagotchi Connection – Cherry

Choosing a Tamagotchi is more complicated than picking the cutest shell. The current devices may all look like tiny egg-shaped virtual pets, but the experiences inside them are surprisingly different.

Some Tamagotchi models recreate the simple gameplay people remember from the 1990s. Others add dozens of characters, collectible items, fashion, online events, breeding or even an entire planet to develop.

Tamagotchi celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, and Bandai’s current US product catalog organizes its devices into five main families: Original Tamagotchi, Tamagotchi Connection, Tamagotchi Nano, Tamagotchi Uni and Tamagotchi Paradise.

Which Tamagotchi should you buy?

Most first-time buyers should choose Tamagotchi Connection. It preserves the nostalgic pixel-art experience while offering far more characters, games and collectible items than the Original Tamagotchi.

Choose Tamagotchi Paradise instead when you want the deepest modern experience, colorful world-building and character breeding. The Original Tamagotchi is best for pure 1997 nostalgia, while Tamagotchi Nano is designed for fans of Sanrio, anime, movies and other collaborations.

Tamagotchi Uni remains the best option for outfits, room decoration and the Tamaverse, but its online-support situation requires careful consideration in 2026.

Which Tamagotchi fits work or school?

None is a set-and-forget toy. Before buying, decide when you can check food, happiness and care alerts. We have not measured a universal number of care minutes: the character’s age, your goals and the model change the routine.

Uni is worth considering if daytime help matters. Its official manual lists sitter availability from 7:00 a.m. to 5:59 p.m.; collect your character before 6:00 p.m. That is a defined care window, not an unlimited pause button.

For any model, check its manual for pause or care-cover options rather than relying on a clock-setting trick. If checking a toy during class or work is not practical, arrange care outside those hours before starting. Muting the beeps makes the toy quieter; it does not remove your responsibility to check it.

Buying two Tamagotchis: which models can connect?

A matching color scheme does not make two devices compatible. If the gift is for siblings, friends or a couple who want to play together, choose the hardware family first and the shells second.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare all columns.

Paradise + ParadiseYesParadise does not connect to Uni, Original or Connection. Shared items and features can differ by edition.

Sources: Bandai’s Connection FAQ, Uni FAQ and Paradise FAQ, checked October 1, 2026.

Connection is not the same as identical content. For example, Bandai says Paradise Jade Forest can connect with Pink Land, Blue Water and Purple Sky, but its newly added items cannot be gifted to those earlier editions. Check the particular activity you want to share before paying extra for a newer shell.

Our buying rule: for two first-time owners, choose two compatible devices in the same current family. When adding to somebody’s collection, ask for the model and generation of the device they already own. A photo of the front and the model information is more useful than “the pink one.” If they will mostly play alone, judge the single-device experience first; a pair is an optional extra, not the starting requirement.

A gift checklist before you choose a shell

  • Confirm the exact model and generation, not just the color name.
  • Check the age label, language and battery or charging requirements.
  • Watch an official gameplay demonstration to judge text size and button navigation; product photos cannot establish readability for every user.
  • If buying a pair, verify that the two exact models can connect and which shared features they support.
  • Keep coin-cell batteries away from young children and follow the product’s battery instructions.

Does Uni’s support date mean the toy stopped working?

No. Bandai’s official Uni news page lists July 13, 2026 as the security-support end date, but also lists events and downloads announced afterward. This is not the same as a confirmed shutdown date. Bandai’s FAQ says the Tamaverse can be accessed offline, although some functions require Wi-Fi. Buy for the features available now, not a promise of indefinite online service.

1. Tamagotchi Connection: the best Tamagotchi for most people

Six Tamagotchi Connection devices in pink, green, blue and rainbow shell designs

Tamagotchi Connection is our best overall recommendation because it combines the recognizable Tamagotchi experience with enough extra content to stay interesting.

It brings back refreshed programming from the nostalgic 2000s device. You still feed your character, play with it, care for it when it becomes sick and influence how it grows. However, Connection gives you significantly more to discover than the basic Original model.

Bandai lists more than 50 characters, over 10 mini-games and more than 150 collectible items. Playing games earns Gotchi Points, which you can spend on food and items for your character.

The feature that gives Tamagotchi Connection its name is direct communication between compatible devices. Two Tamagotchi characters can meet, become friends, play games and exchange gifts. As their relationship develops, they can get married and create a new generation for you to raise.

You do not need two devices for normal care, games or character development. The second compatible Connection is only required for its social features. This makes a single device perfectly usable, while buying a pair creates an especially cute gift for siblings, couples or best friends.

Who should buy Tamagotchi Connection?

Choose Tamagotchi Connection when you want:

  • The best balance between retro charm and gameplay depth
  • A good first Tamagotchi for a child or adult
  • More games and characters than the Original
  • Collectible items and an in-game currency
  • The ability to connect two devices
  • Marriage and multiple generations

What are the disadvantages?

The display and controls deliberately preserve the retro Tamagotchi style. Anyone expecting a colorful, modern virtual world may prefer Paradise or Uni.

The connection features also require another compatible Tamagotchi Connection. A single device remains fun, but you will not experience visits, gift exchanges or device-to-device relationships without a second one.

Our verdict: Tamagotchi Connection is the safest choice when you are unsure which Tamagotchi to buy. It feels authentically nostalgic without being as limited as the Original.

2. Tamagotchi Paradise: the best modern Tamagotchi

Six colorful Tamagotchi Paradise virtual pets with Zoom Dials on a white background

Tamagotchi Paradise expands the familiar virtual-pet idea into an entire miniature world.

Its physical Zoom Dial lets you move between different levels of your New Tamagotchi Planet. You can zoom out to see the planet in space, visit its fields, focus on an individual Tamagotchi and even enter the microscopic cell level.

Traditional care is still part of the experience. You feed your Tamagotchi, clean poop from its field and help it when it becomes unwell. At the cell level, you can look inside the character and treat unhealthy cells.

Holding the Zoom Dial opens Lab Mode, where you can play mini-games, shop, manage settings and view information you have discovered. This makes Paradise feel less like caring for one small pet and more like maintaining and researching a growing Tamagotchi ecosystem.

Depending on the environment and the way you provide care, Tamagotchi can grow into more than 50 characters across 12 species. Breeding passes traits such as colors and eyes to the next generation, creating more than 50,000 possible character variations.

How do the Tama Fields work?

Each Paradise device begins with a particular field based on its edition. For example, Pink Land starts with the Land field, while other versions begin in environments such as Water, Sky or Forest.

Additional fields become available as you develop your planet. The field selection matters because the environment affects which Tamagotchi you can raise. Bandai also states that each device color has a rare character exclusive to that version.

Do you need two Tamagotchi Paradise devices?

No. You can breed characters using one Tamagotchi Paradise through Lab Mode.

A second Paradise adds direct device-to-device interaction. You can connect compatible Paradise devices to trade items, pass down traits and see whether two characters become a successful match. Paradise cannot connect with an Original Tamagotchi, Tamagotchi Connection or Tamagotchi Uni.

Which Tamagotchi Paradise version should you buy?

The original Paradise releases include Pink Land, Blue Water and Purple Sky, followed by editions such as Jade Forest.

For the fullest current connection experience, look for Orange Tropics or White Glacier. Bandai says these newer 2026 editions have larger fields, additional activities and two Link Play mini-games: one cooperative game and one competitive game.

Those Link Play mini-games are not available on Pink Land, Blue Water, Purple Sky or Jade Forest. Therefore, Orange Tropics or White Glacier is the stronger purchase when the price is similar and playing with another person matters to you.

Paradise uses two AAA batteries, which are sold separately, so add batteries before giving it as a gift.

Who should buy Tamagotchi Paradise?

Choose Tamagotchi Paradise when you want:

  • The deepest current Tamagotchi experience
  • An entire planet rather than one simple pet screen
  • Character breeding and inherited traits
  • More than 50,000 possible variations
  • Multiple environments and species
  • A physical zoom dial and more modern presentation
  • Direct interaction between Paradise devices

What are the disadvantages?

Paradise has more systems to understand than the Original or Connection. The shell you buy can also affect your starting field, available characters and certain connection features, so choosing only by color can lead to disappointment.

It is also larger and uses replaceable AAA batteries instead of the rechargeable battery found in Tamagotchi Uni.

Our verdict: Tamagotchi Paradise is the best premium choice and the strongest option for someone who wants a Tamagotchi to become a longer-term hobby.

Before choosing a shell, compare the fields and connection features in Bandai’s Paradise edition guide.

3. Original Tamagotchi: the best choice for 1990s nostalgia

The Original Tamagotchi recreates the digital-pet experience many people remember from 1997, complete with the simple original-style programming.

Your journey begins with an egg. After it hatches, you feed your Tamagotchi, play with it, turn its lights on and off, give it medicine, clean up after it, monitor its health and discipline it when necessary.

The quality of your care determines how it develops. From an egg, it grows through its early stages until it becomes one of seven possible adult characters.

That limited number of outcomes is not necessarily a weakness. It is exactly what makes the Original attractive to nostalgic buyers. There are no online events, large shops or complicated menus competing for your attention. It is a tiny, simple pet that needs regular care.

Original Tamagotchi Gen 1 or Gen 2?

Original Tamagotchi Gen 2 compared with Tamagotchi Connection, including characters, games and items

Check the product name before selecting a shell. Original Tamagotchi devices may use Generation 1 or Generation 2 programming, and the difference is not purely cosmetic.

The character selection and built-in game can vary. Generation 1 models commonly include a game in which you predict the direction your Tamagotchi will move. Generation 2 models commonly use a higher-or-lower number game.

Both preserve the same basic care loop, so choose based on the characters, game and shell you prefer rather than assuming every Original Tamagotchi contains identical programming.

Who should buy the Original Tamagotchi?

Choose the Original when you want:

  • The closest experience to the 1997 toy
  • Very simple virtual-pet gameplay
  • A straightforward introduction to classic care, with regular check-ins still required
  • A cute shell to attach to a bag or keychain
  • A nostalgic gift for an adult
  • Different shell designs to collect

What are the disadvantages?

The Original has considerably less content than Connection, Paradise or Uni. Its simplicity can become repetitive when you expect several games, shopping, customization or long-term collecting.

Our verdict: Buy the Original because you specifically want the classic experience, not because it has the most gameplay. For most new players, Connection offers better replay value.

Check the generation on the packaging and consult the Original Tamagotchi manual before buying.

4. Tamagotchi Nano: the best Tamagotchi for pop-culture fan

Five Tamagotchi Nano devices featuring Toy Story, Hello Kitty, Grogu, Jurassic World and Yuji Itadori designs

Tamagotchi Nano brings the familiar idea of raising and nurturing a virtual pet into different entertainment worlds.

Instead of focusing only on traditional Tamagotchi characters, Nano devices are built around collaborations. Bandai has released editions connected to Sanrio, Star Wars, Wizarding World, Jurassic World, anime series and other recognizable properties.

The devices are approximately four centimeters tall and use a black-and-white LCD. The exact characters, evolution paths, mini-games and animations depend on the collaboration you select. For example, a Pompompurin Tamagotchi Nano lets you care for a Tamagotchi alongside Pompompurin and includes themed dancing, cooking and acorn-picking games. A Jurassic World version lets you raise dinosaurs, play themed mini-games and see scenes inspired by the movies.

This makes Nano a particularly good gift when the recipient already loves a specific character or franchise. The emotional appeal comes from the collaboration as much as from the virtual-pet mechanics.

Who should buy Tamagotchi Nano?

Choose Nano when you want:

  • A favorite anime, movie or Sanrio character
  • A very small collectible device
  • Simpler themed gameplay
  • A cute bag accessory
  • A gift for someone with a specific fandom
  • Several collaboration designs to collect

What are the disadvantages?

Nano is normally less substantial than a mainline Tamagotchi. Its gameplay is built around one collaboration, so it may have fewer systems and less variety than Connection, Paradise or Uni.

Do not select a Nano based only on the shell. Read the exact product name and description to learn which characters you can raise and which mini-games are included. Bandai notes that devices with the same product name generally contain the same gameplay regardless of shell color.

Our verdict: Tamagotchi Nano is the best fandom purchase, but it is not our first recommendation for someone looking for the complete traditional Tamagotchi experience.

5. Tamagotchi Uni: the best Tamagotchi for fashion and customization

Colorful Tamagotchi Uni featuring a customized UniTama, fashion accessories and Tamaverse gameplay

Tamagotchi Uni gives the virtual-pet experience a colorful, connected and highly customizable direction.

You raise your own UniTama, which can develop a distinct appearance and personality. You can decorate its room, give it toys, dress it in accessories, go on Tama Walks, gather materials and create DIY items.

The largest addition is the Tamaverse, an in-device virtual world where your UniTama can encounter characters raised by people around the globe.

Inside the Tamaverse, you can send hearts to other characters, attend Tama Parties, travel to different destinations and share outfits through Tama Fashion. The Tama Arena hosts limited-time events in which characters work together or compete.

You can also connect two Tamagotchi Uni devices directly. Connected characters can play together, exchange items, craft matching accessories and even propose to each other. The device has a rechargeable battery and comes with a charging cable.

An important Tamagotchi Uni warning for 2026

Bandai lists July 13, 2026 as the end of the Tamagotchi Uni security-support period. Its official pages also warn that Wi-Fi services may be suspended and that some functions are only available online.

The date did not cause an immediate closure: Bandai continued announcing Tamaverse events and downloadable items after July 13, 2026. However, future access to every online feature should not be assumed.

For that reason, do not buy Uni solely because you expect years of future online updates. It remains an appealing device for its rechargeable battery, personalities, outfits, room decoration and core Tamagotchi care, but the long-term online situation is less certain than it once was.

Which Tamagotchi Uni edition should you buy?

Standard Uni colors share the same main gameplay, so you can largely choose the shell you find cutest.

Special editions such as Sanrio Characters, Angel Festival and Monster Carnival may include a themed Tamaverse Ticket. These tickets add themed areas, characters, items and mini-games, making the included content more important than the shell alone.

Who should buy Tamagotchi Uni?

Choose Tamagotchi Uni when you want:

  • A rechargeable Tamagotchi
  • A full-color display
  • Outfits, accessories and room decoration
  • Character personalities
  • Crafting and Tama Walks
  • The Tamaverse and worldwide character interaction
  • A Sanrio, Angel or Monster-themed edition

What are the disadvantages?

Some of Uni’s most distinctive features depend on Wi-Fi. Because its published security-support period has ended, it is a less future-proof purchase for buyers primarily interested in online events.

Our verdict: Uni is still the best model for fashion and personal customization, but Paradise is the stronger general modern recommendation in 2026.

Original Tamagotchi vs Connection: which one is better?

Tamagotchi Connection is better for most buyers.

The Original is intentionally basic. You care for a character from egg to adult, play one simple game and try to reach one of seven adult outcomes. Its appeal is authenticity and nostalgia.

Connection keeps the traditional pixel-art feeling but adds more than 50 characters, over 10 games, more than 150 items, Gotchi Points and the ability to raise multiple generations. It provides more reasons to continue playing after the first character grows up.

Choose Original Tamagotchi when the exact 1997 experience is the reason you are buying it.

Choose Tamagotchi Connection when you want a more complete first Tamagotchi without moving to a modern color model.

Tamagotchi Paradise vs Uni: which one is better?

Paradise is the better general purchase in 2026, while Uni is better for fashion and customization.

Paradise focuses on developing environments, discovering species, zooming between different levels and breeding characters with inherited traits. Most of its identity comes from activities performed directly on the device.

Uni focuses more heavily on one personalized character, including its personality, clothes, room, crafted accessories and experiences inside the Tamaverse.

Choose Paradise for:

  • Character collecting and breeding
  • More than 50,000 possible variations
  • Multiple fields and environments
  • Deeper long-term discovery
  • Newer current-edition support

Choose Uni for:

  • Outfits and room decoration
  • A rechargeable battery
  • Tama Walks and crafting
  • Tamaverse travel, parties and fashion
  • Sanrio, Angel or Monster themes

The Uni remains enjoyable, but its expired security-support period makes Paradise the more comfortable recommendation for someone buying only one premium Tamagotchi today.

Which Tamagotchi is best for a child?

The best choice for many children is Tamagotchi Connection. It offers understandable care activities, several games and enough items and characters to create a sense of progress.

Bandai recommends Connection, Paradise and Uni for ages six and older, while many Original Tamagotchi listings recommend ages eight and older. Nano age recommendations can vary by collaboration.

Paradise is a good option for children who enjoy discovering creatures and exploring colorful environments. Original is better for a child who prefers a very simple device, although it can become repetitive more quickly.

Remember that every Tamagotchi requires regular attention. A younger child may need reminders or help understanding why a character is hungry, unhappy or unwell.

Which Tamagotchi is best for adults?

Adults holding a colorful collection of Tamagotchi virtual pets with decorative charms

Ready for your comeback? Get the Tamagotchi Connection on Amazon.

Connection is the best Tamagotchi for most adults returning to the hobby. It feels nostalgic but has more depth than the Original.

Paradise is better for an adult who enjoys collecting, breeding and discovering variations. Uni is best for someone who prefers cozy customization, fashion and room decoration.

Original is the strongest sentimental gift for someone who specifically remembers owning the 1997 version.

What about Tamagotchi Pix, On, Meets and Smart?

There are many older Tamagotchi generations beyond the five models compared here. You may encounter names such as Tamagotchi Pix, Pix Party, On, Meets, Smart, Friends, Mix, 4U and older Connection versions.

This guide focuses on the five families included in Bandai’s current US Tamagotchi product catalog. Older devices can still be appealing to collectors, but availability, language, condition and discontinued companion services can make them harder to recommend as a first purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Tamagotchi to buy in 2026?

Tamagotchi Connection is the best choice for most buyers. It combines classic care with more than 50 characters, over 10 mini-games, more than 150 items and optional device-to-device interaction.

Paradise is the better premium choice for buyers who want deeper modern gameplay.

Which Tamagotchi should a beginner buy?

A beginner should usually buy Tamagotchi Connection. It is easy enough to understand without being as limited as the Original.

Someone who specifically wants a modern, more involved experience can begin with Paradise instead.

Is Tamagotchi Paradise better than Tamagotchi Connection?

Paradise has deeper world-building, more character variations and a more modern presentation. Connection is simpler, more nostalgic and easier to recommend to someone who has never owned a Tamagotchi.

Choose Paradise for depth and Connection for the best all-around introduction.

Does Tamagotchi Connection require two devices?

No. One Tamagotchi Connection provides normal care, games, Gotchi Points, items and character development.

A second compatible device is required only for visits, connected games, gift exchanges, relationships and marriage.

Does Tamagotchi Paradise require two devices?

No. Tamagotchi Paradise supports breeding through Lab Mode on a single device.

A second Paradise adds direct character interaction, trading and connection play. Newer editions such as Orange Tropics and White Glacier also include cooperative and competitive Link Play games.

Can Tamagotchi Paradise connect to Tamagotchi Uni or Connection?

No. Tamagotchi Paradise cannot connect to Uni, Original Tamagotchi or Tamagotchi Connection. Its direct connection functions are designed for other Paradise devices.

Is Tamagotchi Nano a regular Tamagotchi?

Nano is an official Tamagotchi product, but it offers a smaller and more focused collaboration experience. Its characters and games are based on a particular franchise rather than the broader systems found in Connection, Paradise or Uni.

Is Tamagotchi Uni still worth buying in 2026?

Uni is worth considering when you value its rechargeable battery, outfits, room decoration, crafting and themed editions.

It is less suitable when your main reason for buying it is guaranteed long-term access to online events. Bandai’s published security-support period ended on July 13, 2026, and the company warns that Wi-Fi services may eventually be suspended.

Final verdict: which Tamagotchi should you buy?

Buy Tamagotchi Connection when you want one clear, dependable recommendation. It captures the charm people expect from Tamagotchi while adding enough games, characters, items and generational play to justify returning to it.

Buy Tamagotchi Paradise when you want the deepest and most modern current experience. Orange Tropics and White Glacier are especially attractive when you plan to connect with another player.

Buy the Original Tamagotchi for pure 1997 nostalgia.

Buy Tamagotchi Nano because you love its particular character, anime or movie collaboration.

Buy Tamagotchi Uni because fashion, decorating and the Tamaverse matter more to you than guaranteed future online support.
